I have a lymph node in my neck that has been swollen for many months. My doctor put me on a strong antibiotic to see if it was an infection. It went from 2 cm to 1 cm by the time I saw the ENT specialist. He said don't worry about it because it moves and is only 1cm. About 10 days after going off of the antibiotic it is now back to 2+ cm. My doc wants a biopsy. I also have had drenching night sweats for many months on an occasional basis. I know these two symptoms appear in lymphoma and NHL. However, since the lymph node appears to have reacted to the antibiotics, is that a sign that it's simply an infection? Is it true that if the node moves it's OK? I have not lost weight without trying. I am tired but I have two kids ages 2 1/2 and 11 months so I figure that goes with the territory. Thanks in advance for any thoughts you may have. I am totally comfortable with my doctor but would like all of the thoughts that I can get.

hello grace, i really cannot ive you much reassurance at the moment because the lymph node biopsy is really the only way to tell for definate one way or the other. i just felt compelled to type this message to you to send my best wishes that everything will turn out ok for you.
i have been in a horrible situation myself for the last ten weeks with a very large lympg gland(been there at least a year could have been longer)
mine was about and inch and a half, i was also experiencing major hot flushes continuously, so i like you was woried about lymphoma. to cut a long story short after blood tests chest xrays visits to haemotologist and surgeon, this stretched out over 10 long frightening weeks where i had convinced myself that i had nhl i finally had the lymph gland removed just over two weeks ago, just got the results back yesterday- clear no sign of lymphoma, thought that i would feel relived but still feel bloody ill, so obviously still worried. i suppose what i am trying to say is that its not always the worst outcome no matter how positive we are that it will be.
i really know what you are going through at the moment, i too have two young children who i love dearly. i wont suggest trying to take your mind off of it as in my case i just couldnt, but what i will say is that hopefully at the end of this you will emerge as a stronger person with a new outlook on life. please let me know how you are doing, and i will always be here for you to chat to in the meantime. again my thought are with you (i cant say prayers as i am not religious) best wishes love dawnxxx

Dawn39, Thanks for your supportive reply. I am glad that your results were good. I know what you mean by not feeling totally at ease even after being reassured. I suppose it will take time to forget about it once we have convinced ourselves it's going to be bad news. I am still awaiting the blood smear/cell morphology test. I got some blood tests back last Friday and they were a bit concerning for me. I didn't know it but apparently, I've had Epstein Bar and cytomegola virus. Both are immune deficiency viruses and EBV is associated with some lymphomas. My liver test AST was mildly elevated. I do not know the significance of any of this except what I can find on the internet (which sometimes is a bad thing to have access to - too easy to self-diagnose). My doctor is still advocating for a biopsy of the node. Hopefully will have the rest of blood results back today. Thanks again for your supportive words. Focus your energy on those young kids and I would imagine you will soon be able to put this behind you. If you are like me - they are THE reason to live life to it's fullest. Grace

Four years ago I was diagnosed with stage 4 non hodgkins lymphoma, indolent small b cell. I was basically told that my time was limited due to the spread of the cancer, it was all through my lymph system, in my bones and created a spleen 5 times normal size. I tell you this because no matter what you face know that someone else has been there, and is beating the odds. The cancer was treated with a drug called Rituxan. It is a fantastic chemo therapy drug. I have been in and out of remission several times over the last four years, currentley I am fighting with Lung Cancer, possibly due to NHL. There is a blood test that will tell your oncologist if you have active Lymphoma, it is called a Beta Blocker Test, or something like that. Ask your Dr for it. Check your groin and the arm pit area for signs of nodes swelling. Lymphoma is not the death warrant some may have you to believe. I will place you in my prayers for a negative report, if it is not, then hopefully you will take one more piece of advice, believe in yourself, and know you are the master of your fate.

I had the node removed yesterday. Doctor said it was much larger than he thought it was and surgery took much longer than expected (2 hours). However, based upon the frozen section everything looks fine - he believes it to be just a reactive node. I'm not finding anything on-line regarding the accuracy of a frozen section so I'm holding my breath until the final path results come back which will likely be next week. Thanks for everyone's positive thoughts and words. Grace

hi grace i am glad to hear that so far your results are looking hopeful, my operation took about that long as mine was big as well, but the results came back clear after 3 long weeks of waiting, hows your neck feeling at the moment, mine was quite painful and it really swelled up so had to go back to a+e to be told i had an infection. any way i have a new worry now
found a breast lump back 12 weeks ago paid privately for ultrasound and mammogram report said no evidence of alignancy just nodules, i was satisfied, but just after getting clear from node biopsy the breast really started to become painful this has been going on for nearly 2 weeks now and it seems to be around the site of the lump, so am now convinced i have bc, looked on the bc forum and only managed to make myself more frightened after reading that mammograms and ultrasound do come back clear sometimes and that there can still be cancer there, now waiting or appt for breast clininc gp said this could take ages as he says i dont have breast cancer, i wish i could be so sure, but then he is not in this extreme pain, i never new breasts could hurt this much, back to more worry and stress again, dont feel as if this is ever going to end. please let me know how you are doing, are you still getting the sweats, the haemotologist that i was seeing was so lovely , he really wanted to try to get to the bottom of why i am feeling so ill but he said as my blood was fine and the biopsy results were clear all he could do was ofer me another ct scan, this i declined as didnt want to be going through anymore waiting and worrying. but now i have this to worry about, just wonder what my body is doing to me at the moment.

take care please kep me updated all my best wishes love dawn x
