Hi Leo,
I spent 1 1/2 years on tamoxifen but bailed out because I don't know how to tell whether I might have a high level of AIB1 (I am HER2+++). Does anyone know whether the question of cross-talk applies to raloxifene as well as tamoxifen, since they are both SERMs? I am considering trying raloxifene as I am not quite enamored of the aromatase inhibitors.
Is all of this discussion based on in vitro?
Is there a way to learn whether one has a high level of AIB1? |

Hello
The recent article on raloxifene was in-vivo, but it was in people with established osteoporosis, and they only observed that the incidence of breast cancer was lower. It has NOT been tried in adjuvant treatment in vivo, but there is a paper published in 2002 that they tried it in mice:

| I am interested in hearing about your situation. It sounds similiar to mine. I had a lumpectomy and radiation.. I did not do chemo as my doctor suggested. I am still hounded by friends and the doctor. I did not do tamoxifin either.. what do you think? Hollis |

The onc I had is considered top of the line... a good person, and I know he works very long hours. The docs I like, like him.... the patients I know love him...
I couldn't find a wavelength we could genuinely communicate on other than polite exchanges. I believe that a patient with bc should receive at the bare minimum the basic written information about their own cancer characteristics and the choices that are recommended, without having to specifically ask for each piece. I received no explanations and no written information, just the verbal recommendation for CAF x 6 followed by rads and tamoxifen.
I feel that chemo was recommended for me without any understanding at all in terms of who I am as a total human being, which is much more than simply a live organism that possibly still contains cancerous cells after surgery.
I may not be the best person to ask. Maybe Leo can help answer your question too.
I wasn't afraid of losing my hair, or of vomiting, etc. I just do not understand, when a person chooses not to do chemo and then sometimes ends up having a recurrence or metastasis, why it is so automatic to assume that if they had done chemo they would not have had a recurrence or metastasis.... I see those who chose to do chemo constantly having recurrences and metastasis, but instead of blaming that on the chemo that they have had, established medicine usually wants them to do MORE chemo. I also see quite often those who have had chemo and have had recurrence and then have amother chemo regimen frequently go into very rapid decline. I can't get a straight answer about any genuine maintenance of information about how people who have chosen not to do chemo have done in terms of survival or recurrence.
I did chemo strictly on a one-time basis out of respect for my family's wishes and the recommendation of my internist.

| This is exactly how I felt. I never could get any good feed-back on those patients that did not do chemo. I will get a third opinion and try to move on. You hate to think you didn't do all you could to keep this beast from coming back. Thank you for your reply. |
