Hi there, my mum has been diagnosed with secondary cancer - she had breast cancer eight years ago and then was on tamoxifan for five years. It is two years since she has come off and has been monitored regularly. Last year her tumor markers went up but she was told there was no cancer. Then in May the markers went up again and they were suspicious about something on her liver. Anyway eventually today she has been put on hormone treatment. the lesion in her liver is 1.6cm and it is also in some bones. The doctor still remained optimistic that the hormone treatment should contain it. Has anyone else experience of this and is he been ruthful by being optimistic.

Please don't send any sympathetic replies if you don' t have any information. Sorry for being rude but I assume you are all feeling for me, my mum and the situation but I just feel like answers at the moment. Thanks

Hi - it's always worrying when spread happens. All I can say is that there have been indications of development in liver, abdomen and bone in my CT scans, but that chemo has so far either knocked them back or held them static. Hormone treatment failed in my case to hold or reduce it.

We are all different, so my experience is just that, and may have no bearing on what will work for your mum. However, it does show that secondaries can be contained.

Thanks for replying that is good to know, as I was thinking it would be the end of the line should the hormone therapy not work. Thanks again much appreciated

No one can answer this question. Cancer is an individual process. Just when you start to think someone might not make it . .they rally and may even go into remission. There is no way of knowing one way or the other if someone will survive or not. So, it is best to remain positive and hope only for what is best for the patient at this moment in time. Don't try to rush ahead into the future
