My father has been diagnosed with non small cell lung cancer stage 4 but he feels great no pain breaths very well. How can he seem to be in such good health but have only 1 year to live. Will he just suddenly get sick and die? What will happen?

Hi Rick, I am new too, posted last night, but I think it was too long because I have no responses, but anyway, I just wanted to give you a little support. I am not in your shoes as of yet, but I hope all goes well for you and your father.

I have read that some stage 4 NSCLC is operable, but I guess that is only under certain situations.

Have they determined it inoperable, and why? I don't know my mother's stage of cancer yet, but she is currently going through more tests and a bone scan as we speak.

I don't know why your father seems to be fine, because my mother's health is not great, she has a lot of fatigue and pain, but maybe you should ask your father what other information the doctor gave him so you know why he only has a year, and what they plan on doing to help him as far as any treatments?

I hope this helps, I am in the dark as well with my mother. They are wanting to do surgery, but I think that is if they don't find anything else that requires a different treatment option.

Keep us informed!

Rick,
I'm afraid that I can't help too much, because my Dad has small cell, so I don't know as much about NSC. I do know that the stage you have been given is an extensive stage, so that means that other places are involved besides the lungs.

Your Dad may do just great and beat the 1 year time frame. He may also just get weaker and weaker gradually, depending on what organs are involved.

My advice would be to learn all you can and find out what areas of your Dad's body are affected by the cancer. You can then know more about your Dad's prognosis. Don't be afraid to contact his doctor, or go with him to appointments either.

I'm glad that he feels good now, so enjoy this time! My Dad does not feel well and that makes it much harder to enjoy our time, but we are doing the best we can. I will keep you and your family in my thoughts and prayers. And I hope someone with more cancer experience can answer your questions.

Deb

My dad was diagnosed with NSClC 3B about 1 month ago and everything was fine, he only has a hoarse voice. Now however, I've noticed that he has shortness of breath. In fact it has even inuturuped his sleep. He has no pain anywhere else and after all the scans the only place he has Cancer is in his Lungs and throat. I'm starting to worry that this is the beginning of the end. But then I'm holding out hope that his body is trying to fight the cancer because he did start treatment this week. Any information on shortness of breath would be helpful.
