March 2004 my wife was diagnosed with NSCLC. She underwent chemo and radiation at the same time. Several MRI and PET scans were done and the thought of surgery to remove the right top lobe of the lung. The surgery was ruled out due to the cancer shrinking. She continued to work and we continued to enjoy life, although she was weak at times. February of 2005 she had another PET and all was looking good. March 2005 she started getting headaches and in the later part of the month another PET and MRI was ordered. A mass was now in the front right lobe of the brain. She started whole brain radiation that day. For 14 days she had radiation. It seemed that the mass was shrinking and the gamma knife was the next step. April 2005 I came home from work to find her very dizzy, sick and stumbling. I called the doctor and rushed her to the hospital. She went simi comotose and for 62 days streight, she was flat of her back. Test after test was preformed and finally after a week it was determined that the herpies cold sore virus went to the left side of the brain instead of the lip. The radiation and other factors which made her weak and the immune system low allowed this, we were told. Three times we were approched and told "she will not make it through the night". Although she has no short term memory and requires constant watching. I just want to say she is still with us, still smiles and gives the lord the glory. Do not give up on your loved ones. Yes it is hard, very hard at times, but as lone as they know and feel you love them and are praying for them I believe that is what extends their lives. Like most we can not get a streight answer, why, no one really knows. If she dies tonight she will know she was and is loved and where she will go. Yes she has some pain and yes we treat that. Comfort is important. February 19th was her 58th birthday.
