new leukemia diagnosis

I have been diagnosed with leukemia, (AML), and would like to be in touch with other people that have been through this. I will be starting chemotherapy next monday. Wish me luck !

I too was diagnosed recently (7/12/04) with AML Leukemia. I am 44 years old and have spent the last five months in and out of hospital for chemotherapy and secondary infection. I have one more high dose maintenance chemotherapy to complete.

I would be interested to hear from another AML patient who has had a similar situation. I read that for a bone marrow transplant to have a chance to work (albeit 60% chance), it must be done within the first year of a the AML patient's remission. Is that right?

I'm also under the impression that is my best chance for any longevity due to the agressive nature of AML. Is that right?

Hello

For long-term survival for AML the best therapy is a bone marrow transplant, There are a lot of risks related to that, and this has to be weighed against other options. Some experts recommend BMT right away if possible, but that depends on characteristics of the disease.

Hello,my name is jennifer and my father was diagnosed with leukemia almost four years ago. At, first it was really rough, He stayed in the hospital for about 6 mths. when we first found out.He was really sick, we didnt think he was going to make it, but he was strong. He had a bone marrow transplant and he is better. He just started back taking chemo, and he has to take it for four weeks,once a week. We sit there for six hours, and then he is sick and sometimes he is just tired.The side effects are different. I heard that after you only live up to five years with this disease. Is this true? My father looks very good, and has gained about 50 lbs. in the past two years. I was just wondering if you are more likely to die within five years.

This disease is really hard. Sometimes it stays in remission for years, and still it recurs. I am not sure about the specific condition of your father, but there are several patients that are considered cured after a bone marrow transplant.

I had ALL p+ which is just as nasty as AML..
If you make it to 5 years after a BMT your considered almost the same risk as any one else (i.e. cured).
Unfortunately the older you are, the harder it gets especialy 40+

My brother, age 59, was diagnosed with leukemia 2 weeks ago. Initially he was told his form of leukemia is very treatable. He has been hospitalized since his diagnoses due to other symptoms...focal seizures, work disassociation and dimensiona. It appears that a medication has been found to lessen the frequency of focal seizures. Yesterday 05/28/2005, a brain biopsy was performed. I would appreciate some feed back from others that may have experienced these problems. I live a distance from my brother and the doctor and hospital will not provide a lot of information.
