Hi,
My uncle esophagus cancer is back. The doctor's say they can not do any more chemo or radiation treatments any more. Can some explain to me why he can not go through the chemo and radiation again?

Also the doctor's found a new tumor in his upper esophagus this time. The lower esophagus looks black. Does anyone know what this means?

The doctor's also talked about newer idea of freezing the tumor with Nitrogen which might do the trick. Has anyone heard of this before?

Thanks for your help.

Hmeyers,
Esophagus cancer is difficult to treat and there are not a lot of studies on the best treatment. Radiation has its limits and radiation oncologists have a list of the maximum doses that are tolerated to certain areas of the body. If your uncle has reached that limit, it would unwise to give more radiation as the normal tissue will likely become significantly damaged.
Chemotherapy maybe an option, but without know your uncle's specific health issues, it's difficult to make a specific comment one way or another. I'm not familiar with the use of freezing esophageal cancer as a treatment. One thought is to consider a 2nd opinion at a major cancer center. They would be able to review the case as well as maybe talk about any clinical trials that are ongoing. Best Wishes,
