So my Dad has had a diagnosis of Prostate Cancer.

It is in the right side of his Prostate only. The downside is that it is grade 3, 4, and 5 (the majority being 5). I hope that makes sense - I really don't know anything else.

He had a CT scan on Friday and found out today that it is clear Very Happy . What does this scan test for - is it just lymph nodes???

He is due to have his bone scan on Monday. Please send us your prayers and positive thoughts. He will be operated on the following Monday.

Any thoughts or light you can shed?

I am not technically savvy enough about a CT scan to tell you how small a tumor a CT can detect, but it is commonly used as a screening test for all kinds of abnormalities, not just lymph nodes. I am sure that it would also reveal other cancers such a liver mets.

Having given that glowing affirmation for CT scans, Prostate Cancer is often not the easiest thing to diagnose. A CT might show an enlarged Prostate but might not be able to tell you if that is caused by cancer. Sometimes even a biopsy fails to identify Prostate Cancers.

You and your father continue in my thoughts and prayers.

You need the full diagnosis to obtain a better insight, ie:

Recent PSA blood tests dates and numbers ....... ........ .......

Full biopsy report which will give the necessary information:

The number of samples taken, (often 12),

Number of the samples which indicated PC,

The amount of cancer in each positive sample expressed as a %,

How agressive the cancer is. This is indicated by the Gleason Score expressed as three numbers x + y = z.

With some information on the agressiveness and volume of the cancer you'll be able to obtain a clearer picture.
