Hi,

Myself and my husband have adopted a newborn baby boy whose biological grandfather died of leukemia(not sure what kind) at age 64. We're just curious to find out if our son's chances of getting some sort of cancer are greater because of this, than they would be if his grandfather didn't have leukemia. And if so, would his chances be greater for getting leukemia in childhood or adulthood? Any info greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

I have never heard of a familial connection with leukemia. My advice is about the same as I would give if there was one... enjoy your son while you have him. You never know when either of your lives might end (whether due to cancer or getting hit by a truck).

Best wishes.

I'm the same- i haven't heard of a heritory Leukemia. But i'm sure you'll have more replys with people more of an Idea then me. Smile

I would say if you are really concerned, than on your next Dr visit. ask. And if they don't know- ask him/her to find out for you.

I think like many things these days with Cancer- they just don't know. So anything that is weird or a worry- get him checked out. Just comon sense. AND coming from a mother, you know your son and his habits more than anyone. So if something doesn't feel right- don't back down till your happy.

Hope all is well with your little boy and enjoy- they grow up so quick.

Hi,

I cannot add anything different except a possible explanation.

Let's say that the average person has a 1 in 10,000 chance of having Leukemia (that is actually a pretty close number) so that translates to
.01% which is really pretty small. Statiscally a child would have a 3 fold chance of developing the disease if their parent had it. That would translate into 3 in 10,000 or .03%. So as you can see the chances may increase 3 fold but are still very slim for your son. I would not spend one minute of one day worrying about it.

God Bless,
Loren
