Hello, I'm new here. My father was diagnosed with PC in August of 07. He had a stem cell transplant for Lymphoma in April of 07. The PC is a second primary cancer. He has been doing experimental treatments at MD Anderson with a team consisting of his lymphoma and pancreatic oncs. We've been battling his cancer as a family now for 4 years.

Now that the history is there, here's my question for you: He has been running extremely high fevers for the past 3 weeks. He was admitted to the hospital and every test under the sun was performed. We were sent home with a diagnosis of exclusion - they can't find anything else causing the fever so it's the cancer.

Has anyone else experienced these high fevers? If so, was there anything that helped keep them down so you or your loved one was more comfortable? The high fevers give him the rigors, he's out of it and worn out from the extreme changs in temprature.

You seem like a knowledgeable group of folks, and my mother, my sister and I want to keep my Dad as comfortable as possible.

Hi jinjah, I am sorry about your father's struggle with cancer. MD Anderson is a wonderful hospital... one of the best cancer centers in the US.

It is possible that the cancer could be causing the fever but his medical team should be able to treat that... at least I would think they could. Pancreatic Cancer is so devastating and affects people in so many ways. You and your father are in my thoughts and prayers.

Thanks, Brainman.

Yeah, it's weird - there is not a lot they can do for the fevers - we're giving him Dexamethasone and tylenol. He can't take many of the usual things because of his recent stem cell transplant - nothing that thins the blood or affects platelets.

They seem to be keeping them in check for the moment. Now his temp is going down to 94-95 - also scary as it's very low. He's got an appointment here at the Moores Cancer Center here in California Monday, hopefully they will be able to help with the symptoms. This sucks!

Just wanted to let you know that we have experienced this with my father. It is very scary to see them have these rigors and high fever. We took my father to the emergency room and of course, they admitted him and did several cultures. Finally, after discharge and days later when we went for a treatment, we found out that the test actually showed blood posioning which is from the tumors. The oncologist put my dad on a high power antibotic and gave him fluids as well. We have learned the signs that the fever is coming when he says that he is cold and we immediately give him Tylenol. Also, we keep the antibotic on hand as well and try to keep that in his system. This seems to work for us. PC is awful disease. May God bless you all on this journey........
