Hello everyone! I am new here. My Husband has been going through alot and it's so stressful on us. About 3-4 months ago he was complaining of a sharp pain in his chest and shoulder. He had shortness of Breath also. I made a appointment and he finally agreed to go in to the DR. We were NOT expecting everything it's turning out to be though. It's so stressful!! He is 36 years old. Has been a smoker for about 13 years. maybe a little more then half a pack. The DR sent him in for X-RAYS and the X-RAY showed Pleural Effusion in his left lung. They sent him for a Thorosentesis and they drained 1 1/2 Quarts. It came back as "Inconclusive" So the DR sent him for a CT scan of the chest with Contrast. We went to the DR today and this is the result from the CT scan. I requested copies from the X-RAYS -Cytology of the pleural fluid and the ct scan. Here are the results from the CT scan below.. Now we have a referral to a Pulmonologist. The DR told us it's 50/50 CHANCE of being cancer. What are your thoughts? This is just draining us!!! I am trying to stay strong for him, but It's just so hard. I have a 3 yr old son who is on the go constantly. It's hard to ever get a break!

So by looking at this can anyone explain anything to me!"? What are your thoughts? Thank you!!!

Evaluation of the lung fields show evidence of a spiculated 1.6 CM peripheral left lower lobe superior segment nodular lesion with pleural tagging. small left pleural effusion is noted.

The brachiocephalic vessels, aoritic arch, proximal and peripheral pulmonary arteries are within normal limits and caliber. There are small less then 1 CM Mediastinal lumph nodes. no hilar lymphadenopathy. the cardiac chambers are normal size.
the bony thorax is grossly intact.
No pericardial effusion is seen

Conclusion-

1.6 CM Peripheral left lower lobe superior segment nodular lesion with pleural tagging. Normal sized mediastinal lumph nodes. Suspicious for malignancy. Resolving pneumonic infiltrate although unlikely cannot be excluded. May consider PET scan or Biopsy

Clinical correlation recommended.

Brady054, I am very sorry about your husband's health concerns. It sounds like the radiologist things that the CT is showing a possible cancer. However, the only way to know for sure it to have a biopsy done. I PET scan will only help to see if the tumor is using more sugar than normal... usually an indicator of cancer. But if given the option, your husband should have the tumor biopsied.

You and your husband are in my thoughts and prayers.

Brady054 try to keep your hopes (and your husband's) up...like the doc said that could or could not be lung cancer. A lot of people have spots show up in their lungs that doctors will monitor for years but they never change. Like Brainman said a biospy would be best but the doctor may want to do a PET scan first. The PET scan will show if the spots have an uptake that could mean they are active cancer cells. PET scans are fairly new and some doctors are weary of using them. I will pray that you get good news in the coming days and weeks!
GET YOUR HUSBAND OFF THE CIGS THOUGH!

I also am sorry to hear that you are going through such a stressful time. Tests, tests, and more tests. They will wear you down with worry, but it sounds like they are following typical protocol in following up on the CT results. Dustin is right, the PET scan will probably be next and then they will assess and go from there.

I know how worried you are -- it is tough to wait around for doctors and tests. Often cytology reports will come back inconclusive. Sometimes the fluid will yield conclusive results and they can skip the biopsy. Wait and see what they recommend next.

Please see that both of you get rest and pray for strength to get through the days ahead.

Keep us posted.

Best wishes!
