FOLFOX and diet

Does anyone have experience with diet during the chemo? One worker at the hospital told me to avoid eating green as they interfere with chemo. And of course, to avoid eating red meats. Doctor said eat everything. Well, they are from different worlds, right? Another friend of mine is begging me to change my eating habbits, to avoid animal products. What shall I do?

That's a good question that I don't think anyone will ever agree on! And it's a asked lots of people, several times!

Probably no one knows for sure because everyone is different.... what works for one person might not work for another person. So you just need to find what works for you.

The no meat suggestion is because meat (especially red meat) is harder to digest. The stop eating greens suggestion is because it has lots of good stuff for you that might helps support the cells, instead of damage them.... as the chemo is trying to do to the cancerous ones (though i don't agree with that suggestion)

I've found trying to eat a balanced, alkaline diet the best suggestion, as well as avoiding all processed and preserved foods (it isn't easy!)
Though this is ideal in my opinion.... it's important more than anything to just make sure you eat something, and keep up your strength. It's also very important to drink heaps of water!

Though some Dr's say you can eat what you want, i think that's silly.... isn't one of the risk factors of most diesease and illness poor diet??? Sometimes I wonder if most Dr's have studied anything in school besides pharacueticals.... I've found natropaths much more useful when it comes to questions about diet, and cancer treatment in general.

I do not know if green interfere with chemotherapy. However, greens are hard to digest because of the fiber content. Normally, a diet rich in fiber should help prevent colon cancer. But when trying to recover it might cause some discomfort if not pain to eat much fiber.

I would maintain a balanced diet. I agree with your doctor. During treatment, you need to make sure your body is getting all the nutrients it need in order to withstand the chemotherapy.

I have never heard the greens and cancer link. I'm limited on what I can eat...not because of chemo anymore, but because of my colostomy. Some of that green stuff (and raw fruits, too) can cause some pretty yucky cramping once in a while. However, if I see something I like (particularly that green stuff because I know it's good for me), I eat it. The 15 minutes of pain that I will possibly encounter later is okay with me. With my colostomy about the only thing I haven't tried is popcorn. I'm afraid of that one. And beef...I eat that too, but we also eat a lot of pork and chicken.

All my doctor told me was to eat as much as I could to put some weight back on...so I do...including the glass of eggnog I've been treating myself to during the Christmas season.

I do take a multivitamin, B6, B12, and fish oil -- all with my oncologist's approval. It's important to check with your oncologist before starting any vitamin/herb regimen if you are on chemo as some of these things can interfere with the chemo.
