beejay31, I am very sorry about your cancer... I am just assuming you are asking because you have advanced Pancreatic Cancer. Advanced (Stage IV) Pancreatic Cancer is one of the worse cancer that exist. Some people do live for 2+ years if they are treated very aggressively and a good Research Medical Center. I do not know anything about Shands in Gainesville so cannot express an opinion one way or another about it. But you should go to the best medical center you can get to. You might want to ask your own oncologist for his/her recommendation.

Jim: Thank you very much for your reply. My husband is the one who has pancreatic cancer -- just diagnosed this past week. He underwent ultrasound, CT scan, and then pancreatic biopsy -- and our Gastroenterologist just gave us the report this last week. We are scheduled to see a local Oncologist this Wednesday -- am so frightened about waht he will tell ys, We want to take my husband to Shands Hospital in Gainesville -- IF the Oncologist will refer us. Oh, my name is Betty -- Beejay31 issimply part of my e-mail address. Thanks again for your reply.

Betty, thank you for the clarification. I am very sorry about your husbands cancer. Even if his oncologist is hesitant about making a referral, it is his legal obligation to do so if your husband requests it. Sometimes, small town oncologists will make a referral to larger medical centers for a "second opinion" but when it comes to the chemotherapy the local oncologist is the one that follows up on that part. I know that is how it was with me. The doctors in Nashville decided on what chemo I should be on but my oncologist here is the one who followed up on their orders. It just was easier on me not to have to go the Nashville in order to receive treatment that I could just as easily receive here.
