Well I'm new to this thread and I hope someone can explain if I should worry or not. I have an appointment with a pulmonary doctor tomorrow.
I had suffered chronic bronchitis with slight pneumonia 2 weeks ago which was confirmed by x-ray at the ER. Followed up with my family doctor one week later and he recommended a CT Scan w/contrast since fluid was found on the lungs. Saw my doctor today and now I find out I have a few nodules on the lungs. I can't even make sense of the report. It says I have subpleural geometric opacities in the right greater than the left with one nodule that is 7mm. Also a 4.2 mm nodule in the right lower lobe. Slight increase reticular-nodular markings in the right middle lobe which makes mention of the pneumonia. And finally, pleural based nodules in the right upper lobe measuring up to 5mm and similar positioning of the left upper lobe measuring up to 4mm. It also there is adjacent subpleural infiltrate and/or atelectasis which may be result of post inflammatory scarring.
The doctor reading this at the hospital suggests a 3 month followup but my doctor said today not to wait and to see a pulmonary doctor and to let him decide.
Please help me decipher this report as I'm a nervous wreck. I am an asthmatic and have been since a child but for the most part I'm in good health. I was a smoker but had quit approx. 25 years ago.
Thanks so much for your help. |

Hi DisneyFan. Nodules in the lungs can be other things than cancer. Having said that, it is not quite time to panic but concern is understandable. I do agree with your doctor... you should see a pulmonary doctor and maybe have a biopsy of those nodules just to make sure they are not malignancies.
You are in my thoughts and prayers. Let us know what you find out. _________________ Jim

Dis,
I'm glad to hear that this situation is being pursued by a lung specialist. This will help determine the nature of the nodules.
Very best of luck!

Appointment went well. Apparently I have alot of scar tissue from past bronchitis, possibly even going back to when I was a child. I didn't do very well in the breathing test but he felt I may not be fully recovered from my pneumonia yet.
He's sending me for bloodwork and I have to go back for a more extensive breathing test and then another visit. He told me being an asthmatic as well that he wants to keep an eye on me.
His opinion he wasn't too concerned right now so I guess that's good news. He was very thorough and went over the CT scan with me and I could see everything and I have to say I was amazed at the scar tissue on both of my lungs.
Thanks again everyone and I'll keep you posted. |

Dis,
This sounds very hopeful! I am sorry for your breathing problems. That is very hard to take physically and emotionally. Keep us posted.

PBJ-Yes, I was amazed how bad I did on the breathing test and the nurse said it's probably always been like this for me and I don't realized how bad it is because it's just the way it's always been for me but then she did say it's possible I'm not fully recovered from the pneumonia yet and that is why they want to wait a month and then have a more extensive one done again and we'll go from there.
She asked if I get shortness of breath with stairs and I told her that I did. My house has a basement as well as an upper floor and I'm always out of breath after going up or down so maybe as I'm getting older my asthma is getting worse, I don't know.
My main issue is the nodules on the lungs and I just want to keep an eye on them. My husband just lost his stepmother in March to lung cancer so you can imagine how much this frightens me.
Thanks again for your concern and I'll keep you updated. |
