Hi my 61 year old dad was just told this week that he has a secondary cancer in his shoulder /neck area (near collarbone) doctors say it is treatable but a CT scan showed that he has several nodules in his chest area . he has been referred to the cancer clinic and is awaiting a reply for his appointment. Is there a possibility that the nodules in his chest area are treatable as well ? or is it possible that these nodules are not cancerous ? Also how would they test the nodules to find out if they are cancerous?

Thanks
MK

Hello

The chest nodules can be anything. I am not sure if the area near the collarbone is a lymphnode, and the primary cancer is in the lung, but lung nodules can certainly be benign.

To find out one possibly needs to have a biopsy, though this is not always necessary if this information will not change treatment plan, since biopsies in the lung carry risks that are not negligible.

best regards,
Leo

Bethany

Risks of lung biopsy (through the chest wall)
- Pneumothorax: accumulation of air between the lungs and chest wall, causing the lung to collapse.
- Bleeding: the needle can puncture an artery and cause significant bleeding inside the chest cavity (hemothorax)
- Infection: rare, but can occur.
- pain, which can become significant.

best regards,
Leo
