Chlorine can cause many kinds of cancer, especially bladder cancer, and some rare cancers such as sarcoma or leukemia. It would worth knowing how many people diagnosed with cancer (esp. rare cancer) could relate their frequent contact with chlorine, such as from drinking water or swimming pool. Any feedback?
A question: if you swim in a very, very chlorinated indoor pool for 1-2 hours every day for over a year, how likely you'll develop cancer from this? Sarcoma is a rapidly progressing cancer, could one develop it just after a year of swimming in an over chlorinated indoor pool?
-Thanks for any comments |

Like so many of these claims, it is very difficult to establish if there is a danger or not. Most of the links to rectal cancer are related to drinking highly chlorinated water rather than swimming in chlorinated water.
Does your question about sarcoma mean that you think you may have developed one? |

Thank you Vee for your reply. I'm trying to look for a good doctor to see which is not easy. I don't know what the slightly hard mass/lumps in my abdomen are--could they be swollen lymph nodes? (can they be felt 2-3" above the navel?) Whatever they are, it's not normal. Since I have a healthy lifestyle, the only cause, direct or indirect, I could think of is swimming daily, either because of the chlorine, or because of some viruses in the pool.
p.s. re most due to drinking chlorinated water rather than swimming: Not many people swim daily for more than a year |

Clearly there is something worrying you and a doctor is the obvious next step. It is really not possible to say from a description on the net whether there is a serious problem or a "benign" one. There are tests that will have to be done in order to be sure.
Can you tell us where you are? There may be people who can suggest a good doctor.
Whatever, do keep us informed of how things go. |

| Thanks, Vee. I'll really appreciate a recommendation of good doctors in NYC. I did some more research and lymphoma is another possibility if those "lumps" turn out to be enlarged lymph nodes. |

so is a abstruction in bowel, Hernia, enlarge or irritative intestine, etc etc, etc.
Get it looked at. From any Dr first, beofre worrying yourself more. sometimes the more you look up the more you "what if it's this..."
See your normal GP- then get into the specialities etc. _________________ Thinking of you Inica

Kelly,
Are you still screwing around with this issue? I thought you were going to see a General Practitioner last week. Please see a GP who will direct you to a specialist if there is a need. It will ease your stress immensely!
Best of luck,

I have never heard of chlorinated water causing cancer. Pure chlorine gas maybe. I know that one of the first questions that went through my mind after being diagnosed was: What caused it in the first place? Over the years, I have never found a conclusive answer to my question. In addition, I have found that it really does not matter that much; I have cancer and need to take care of it. Obviously, if I knew what the cause of my cancer was I could warn other the avoid to much exposure to "x".
As others have said, you do need to be get checked by your own doctor.
Kelly, you are in my thoughts and prayers. _________________ Jim

Kelly the chances of you getting NHL from a pool are nil. We don't even really know what causes it although researchers have a good idea of basically what is going on.
Swollen nodes are common, lymphoma is not, so don't panic. Go and see a doctor quick if it bothers you
