Greetings All

I have recently been diagnosed as T2a, Gleason 3+4=7, with 4 of 12 cores positive for adenocarcinoma. PSA= 8.8. I was seen by a urologist in Oak Ridge, Tn who is waiting to hear from me regarding treatment choice. I have also had recommended to me a Dr. Charles Reynolds in Knoxville, who performed a very successful RP on the father of a friend.

Can anyone recommend any other urologists/surgeons in the Knoxville, Tn area, that they have had success with?

corynski, I am very sorry that you have Prostate Cancer. I do not know any for the urologists in Knoxville but I am sure the one the did the surgery on your father is a good option. If you have a choice, definitely go with the RP. Keep us informed.

You are in my thought and prayers during this most difficult time.

Thanks Brainman

My best lead so far is Dr. Charles Reynolds who performed a very successful RP on the father of a nurse friend. He's also older then the urologist I was originally referred to who was very perfunctory and gave me minimum information. He does come recommended but I feel more comfortable with Dr. Reynolds who is older and more experienced.

But there's a glitch. Both these urologists belong to the same association so I'm informed Medicare requires a 90 day period between seeing the one following the other. Which brought me to the point of ordering a commercial PSA test kit to track my PSA, since Medicare only pays every 6 months.

I feel like a blind man trying to find a way.

Charley, so you have to use you current urologist even though he does not do RPs??? Do you know if Medicare will pay if he makes the referral for you?

No, I guess I could go with my current urologist, but i"d like to get a second opinion. He can't refer me to another doctor in the same urology group, and Medicare says I have to wait 90 days to see another doctor in the same group. But not in a different group.

I'm trying to find one the better surgeons around, but that information isn't easy to get. I would think an older more experienced doctor would be better, but how would you ever know. When I called my urologist's office and inquired, they would only tell me that all their doctors were required to do surgery once a week. So, guessing maybe two surgeries a week would be about 100 a year at most. And he's been practicing since 1989 so he could have done quite a few. Maybe that is standard for other offices. I think I just have to ask him straight out what his record is. Is that the thing to do?

And today I find out I had the wrong information concerning another doctor, that it wasn't him who performed a successful operation on my friend's father, it was his older partner who is now retired.

As a single old fart it's not easy to think of traveling to another city, but it is possible. Nashville is only about 4 hours from here. Decisions, decisions...... and time is flying by.
