My sister saw her oncologist today after a weeks break from her first chemo cycle.

Unfortunately she had a blood test today and the oncologist phoned her and said it is too low to give her chemotherapy this week. She has to wait another week for a repeat blood test.

Is this normal. She had a blood transfusion just before her first cycle of chemo. She actually seems a little better to me. She certainly has more energy, although her morphine patches have been upped from 50mg to 75mg. Any advice appreciated.

This is why they give a blood test before the next chemo treatment; so they can determine if the body is ready to accept more of the chemo. Sounds like the oncologist is right on. Keep in mind the chemo is some heavy chemicals and even with a blood transfusion, it only takes one treatment for the chemo to start affecting the body.

Indeed, the blood tests are always done before cycles of chemo for this reason.

The problem for your sister is building up her blood counts between cycles, which will normally be assisted by a good balanced diet. It might be advisable to seek advice on what dietary advice and help can be given.

You might look at this site: http://www.lifemel.co.uk/index.php

It has good reports of supporting the system through chemo.

Yes, it is normal. On Fri., June 6th, my dad had a WBC and platelet counts of 0.1 and 5,000, respectively. Today, his WBC was 3.7 and platelets were 292,000. Much improved over 10 days ago. Smile
