I have had a mild to moderately atypical mole excised last april from my left middle toe. No melanoma, thank God. I have a regular checkup scheduled in about a month and was quite sure no similar mole appeared in the last year, but - Shocked lo and behold: This evening I have discovered a dysplastic nevus that I do not remember having. It's fuzzy edged and weardly shaped, having at least 3 bands of different brown (apart on the edge almost black) and it's leveled with the skin too.
The only good thing about it is that it's only about 3.5x2.5mm in size...

While I have read most of what's available on the web and talked extensively with several doctors I know chances of a melanoma are so minuscule I might as well be hit by a passing-by black hole. I do not want to sound too worried... but, since my 30 year old friend just died of breast cancer a week ago... this is an extremely bad time for my skin to be playing tricks on me.

Should I be worried?
What is the incidence of dysplastic nevi turning malignant?
What is the margin of error of tests conducted on excised moles?

mrT,

Thanks for posting. Any mole that looks suspicious should be taken out if at all possible. That not only gets rid of a potential problem, but pathologists have the entire sample to see what it was: whether it was cancerous or not.

best regards,
Leo

Thanx for your answer.
I am patiently awaiting the checkup in may.
As with the first mole, this one is far too small to be of any signifficance.
I am confident that I am having over-reaction to anything medical that has "onko" in it's name. Bad experience.
