    mom with stage iv

My mom was dx last week with pc on the tail that has spread to the abdominal wall. The oncologist has given her 6-12 months with chemo. Her ca-19 level was 0 but another one (can't remember which) was 47 and normal was 3. What does that mean. I have seen some numbers off the charts. My aunts decided to plan a 2 week cruise for my mom in mid february and I don't think it is being realistic. She already is in alot of pain and is tired all the time. I just don't know what to expect. She is starting chemo this week and i'm hoping that she tolerates it well. I love her so much and I never thought I would lose her this soon. I'm only 25 and there is so much more I need her for.

If the cancer hasn't metastasized to the inside of a major organ (say, the liver) then your mom may be able to enjoy many more months of life. I was stage IV Jan 09 and have taken several trips in the months since, even though the prognosis was only for several months of life. It is a struggle right now, for sure, but my wife and I got back today from taking our old RV to the SC coast for a nice weekend.

So, my advice is to talk to the oncologist about the mets and plan a treatment and a life plan as best you can around them.

Please keep us posted on your mom, and know that we are thinking and praying about her.

Thank you for your reply and your prayers. My mom is planning alot of trips, including a two week cruise to hawaii in march. I think it's a small chance to go given how tired she is now and how much pain she is in. It will hopefully be one of many trips we can take with her. We're hoping the chemo will help eleviate some pain. She had almost no pain 6 weeks ago and she is sometimes doubled over now. It makes us think the cancer is fast growing. I am just praying for the strength to be there for her and take care of her without hurting my family as well. It seems like such a delicate balance act. You are all such amazing people. It gives me hope and strength to hear your stories and feel your support. Thank you for that.

    Hi lilypad

I guess I was in the same situation as you earlier this year. My dad recently passed away from pancreatic cancer and it was the most challenging 8 months of my life. Your mom sounds like she's in good spirits and I think that's so important. The only thing you can do for her and yourself is just to be there.. and there will be times that it will be crazy tough but u gotta keep your head up.
I've private messaged you my email incase you want to talk cause i found that really helped a lot.

    best
