Ok here is my story. I had a cyst develop in my neck. Had a chest xray and CT scan done. Xray was clear, CT of neck showed the cyst. Went in for a guided FNB, and they found an enlarged right superclavicular lymph node. Did 3 passes and sent me on my way. Got a call a week later that I have cancer and they aren't sure what kind. Doc shedules PET/CT scan of entire body. PET/CT came back normal, even on the enlarged superclavicular lymph node. Doc is baffled concitering the results of the FNB. I have surgery scheduled for the 6th or march to remove the cyst and look at the lymph node. While I am elated about the PET scan in all reality what am I facing? I know the results are the results, but how often is a FNB give a false positive for cancer? Thanks Everyone
Hello, welcome to the forums but I am so sorry you have the need to find us.
On the topic of FNBs I can only speak from the non hodgkins lymphoma aspect that they really are next to useless.
I had 3 of them on 3 different nodes and all inconclusive.

Iffy scan Nov. 2011.
Scan Feb 2012 .still in remission.
May/2012. U/sound, thyroid scan, FNB. Benign adenoma. A lump in otherwords, nodule if you wish to be specific.
Still NED Nov 2012. On to yearly bloods now.
I know the results are the results, but how often is a FNB give a false positive for cancer?
Very very often but I only know about FNB's and Non hodgkins lymphoma. FNB's are so unreliable that specialists (hematologists and oncologists) encourage general practioners to avoid them and go straight to an excisional biopsy. As this is being done now you can stop worrying about that. It sounds like you are going to be OK ,especially with those scan results and I hope you will have no reason to hang out here

I may not have gone where I intended to go, but I think I have ended up where I needed to be.
I've got to say, surgery with general anesthesia is the bomb. Of course I would rather not have it, but if you do, it is amazing! 2 hours pass like 15 seconds. Ok so the cyst is out as well as 4-5 right superclavicular and other swollen lymph nodes around the cyst he sent for biopsy. I have a follow up visit on the 15 to look at how well I'm healing form the neck surgery and discuss the biopsy results. I will tell you my neck is SORE and swollen, it is draining into my chest and is a bit red. I have always been one to be hyper sensitive to procedures. This feels like a tooth ache in my neck. Ok I'll quit with the rambling and whining. Here is to all of you having a good day.

Well I got the results today. Thyroid cancer that has metastisized to other lymph nodes. We are going to get the thyroid out next Thursday. I was hopping to say goodbye to you folks today, but I will start now by saying hello.
