34 Years Old, Worried About Colon Cancer, Colonoscope Scheduled

Heya all. Been finding various forums for this online, and I decided to post here.

I'm 34 years old. No family history of colorectal cancer - my dad had non-hodgkins lymphoma. I don't smoke at all or drink regularly. Overweight. (6'4, 320, exercise and watching what I ate dropped me from higher, still a lot more to go). Pretty sedentary.

Recently diagnosed with gallstones. I have flat-ish stools. No other symptoms, really. But the flat-ish stools make me extremely paranoid. (They're not paper thin of course, but noticeably flat.) No blood in my stool, though I recently had some bad external hemmerhoids (probably butchered the spelling) after some stomach flu, and I've had brief (1-2 days) bouts of blood in my stool in the past, though that was months ago at this point. Bowel movements every day, sometimes multiple times in a day if I ate a lot. Normal colored, though as I said, typically shorter lengths and on the flat side.

Scheduling a colonscopy tomorrow. Had a digital exam, nothing found. Full abdominal ultrasound, nothing found but the gallstones. I figured I'd post here.

I'm paranoid of course, because I google around reading up on colon cancer symptoms, and I'll see 'flat stools' mentioned, and 'you normally never see any symptoms until it's too late and you're going to die and sometimes you see no symptoms at all and it's still too late'. So, you know - keeps me nice and worried.

I was wondering if anything else besides cancer could cause consistent somewhat flat stools? And also, can polyps cause flat stools even if they are non-cancerous?

    Thanks in advance.

Hi victor, glad you are having colonoscopy to rule out problems. Many things can cause bowel problems, please don't google and scare yourself. Just have colonoscopy and be sure. Wishing you peace.

    Victor,
First of all, congratulations on loosing weight. At your size, the weight will come off quickly at first. Don't be discouraged if the rate of weight loss decreases. My husband is 6'8'' and 265 lbs (120 kilograms). He was over 280 when we met. I know that it is easy to make excuses for your weight because of your height. You know your goal. Keep at it and you will achieve it.

Yes flattened stools can caused by a polyp or other obstruction such as hemorrhoids or even a hernia. Polyps can absolutely be non-cancerous. That is why the colonoscopy is such a great tool. Polyps can be identified and removed before becoming cancerous. Irritable Bowel Syndrome (I.B.S.) and spastic colon can also cause flattened stools.

The symptoms that I had were changes in my bowel movements. At first it was frequency. I thought I was just constipated, but then I would have boughts of diarrhea. I was actually diagnosed with I.B.S. before being correctly diagnosed with colon cancer. My doctor was reluctant to refer me to a G.I. for a colonoscopy because of my young age. It is good that you are getting the colonoscopy. I should have pushed harder to get a colonoscopy sooner. Instead, my tumor caused a blockage that landed me in the emergency room and I was diagnosed three days later when a colonoscopy was done. I had a CT scan before the colonoscopy that was unable to show my tumor.

If the colonoscopy is clear, and you still have bowel problems, then I recommend you keep a record/journal of your bowel movements and symptoms. For this you should search for the Bristol Stool Chart. This describes the 7 types of stool. Once you know the types it will help you in record keeping. So you could write "type 3," instead of "sausage shaped with cracks."

    All the best to you!

    Thanks for the reply all.

I've had changes in my bowel movements as well - never really constipated, but sometimes diarrhea/loose stools. On the other hand, I've also had a pretty poor and sporadic diet fairly often (junk food, etc. You don't get to my weight eating normal.) I've never, to my memory, had any constipation to the point where I wanted to go to the bathroom but could not. No pains in my abdomen that I've noticed - maybe now and then a gas pain or such. The sort of thing that's fleeting and momentary, and not regular or constant.

Either way, I'll see what goes on with the colonoscope. That will be the first time I've ever had any medical experience which required me 'going under'. (Just stitches as a kid and such.) So, here's hoping.

Hey all. Just a minor update. (Graphic, pardon me.)

I started taking some fiber supplements. Bright side: No flat stool. At all. In fact everything there has been entirely, shockingly normal since the fiber supplements.

Yesterday - some very small amount of blood in stool. First time in months really. I've had it before - has always disappeared in 3-4 days tops.

Colonoscope scheduled for May 8th regardless.
