My aunt (60 years old) was diagnozed with stomach cancer (low differentiated adenocarcinomas, only expanded to nearby lymph) last November. She had a surgery last November, 2/3 of her stomach removed and surrounding lymph cleaned. She started her first session of chemothrapy 2 or 3 months ago, but the problem comes: she is reacting so strongly to it that her doctor asks her to stop it, and I dont think they give any advice on future treatment. (There is no information whether she has gone for a check if the tumor starts to spread again.)
What I am worried about is that the cancer re-occurs without chemotherapy.How much is the chance?
What can we, the relatives, do for her? I mean to buy certain medicines to control the cancer, or recommend a proper diet, etc.?
I would try going somewhere else maybe do some research and find out who has other treatments that she can take. You have to take a strong role in your own recovery learn all you can make informed dicisions because each one could be the last. The doctor your using might only know one way but there are others who have other ideas. Always get more then one opinion. Don't feel like you are stupid and shouldn't question a treatment or a diagnoses. Don't give up.
I had a very strong reaction to 5FU after my first treatment. They thought I may be part of a group that is considered allergic to the drug, but testing ruled that out; at least ruled out the mutation for which they could test.
Subsequent treatments we administered differently (via mediport and/or in pill form (xeloda)), and also used a lower dosage (half the typical amount). Not sure if those options were discussed or not.
Her check results(B-scan and blood test) came out and says that everything is fine up till now. She has gained back her weight and feels quite optimistic about her recovery.
The doctors suggest chinese medicine as an alternative, which takes slow(and small or no?)effect (at least not make it worse, dont know if there is any scientific proof?) and she is now using.

your choise of chinese medicine was wise.my grandmother ,with 3/4 of stomach removed last year,similar with your aunt,had recovered a lot by taking chinese medicine.she acquired appetite and was in goog spirit in ten days
or so.
