I am 36 years old and I was diagnosed a couple of days ago with Stage 1 Grade 1 Uterine Cancer. I have been reading a lot about it and it appears that obesity is a risk factor.
I have been overweight or obese since childhood and have always had irregular periods. I was diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes about 8 years ago and I have had high blood pressure. These are other risk factors in Uterine cancer. The thing that confuses me is that two years ago, with the help of an dietician and endocrinologist, I lost 85 lbs putting me close to a healthy weight. I started having regular periods and even confirmed ovulation with a blood test and keeping track of my basal morning temperatures.
While we were trying to get pregnant, I put back on about 45 lbs but my Diabetes and blood pressure were still controlled and I seemed to be having regular periods but they were getting lighter and included mid cycle spotting. My fertility doctor found the cancer when she did a hysteroscopy.
My question: how many of you are also overweight or obese and are young with Uterine cancer? I am not judging since I am there myself. I just want to get an idea. I know so many people who are overweight or obese who don't get this. It is hard not to be so angry with myself for not controlling my weight. But, as many of you know, it is not simple or easy to reach and maintain a healthy weight--especially when you have been that way since elementary school!
