Lymphoma ABVD / BEACOPP Response adapted trial.

I am starting this trial this week, Oct 24 2010.

It's in the national registry (Thanks Brainman) but I thought I'd add it specifically in case anyone wants to ask me questions after or during the trial.

Using pet scans after 2 cycles of ABVD, the trial weighs the effectiveness of switching to BEACOPP if the patient is not progressing well enough with just ABVD.

As I see it, it gives me an option to switch if ABVD is not working. A choice I'd not have in standard treatment.

    Hi Jim,
Didn't see any update on the status of your trial, just wondering if you felt it was fruitful.

Well I guess I should stop by here more often than every 6months. I'm happy I participated in this particular trial. To be honest the treatment wasn't all that different from standard ABVD. The purpose was to determine if a PET scan after 2 cycles can predict "sort of" the outcome of the treatment. In the US, mostly ABVD is used for HL. According to study if after two cycles you are PET positive, you switch to BEACOPP for the remainder of treatment. My PET was negative after two cycles so I continued ABVD for 4 more cycles.

The odd thing was that after 6cycles my PET showed a few new areas of concern, 3 months later all clear again.

The main benefits of the trial were that I had more extensive testing on Lungs, heart etc. before treatment started. When I had some pulmonary embolisms and pneumonia during the 5th month of treatment, they had a good benchmark to determine the extent of the damage. I also felt better knowing that the data collected may help others make decisions in the future if you have a choice between ABVD or BEACOPP.

18 months after finishing chemo, still clear and no regrets about choices. Sorry reply took so long, I'll try to stick around for awhile this time if anyone has questions about the trial or cancer care in upstate NewYork.
