Exclamation Please help us !!!!!!!!!esophageal cancer at 83. Please help!!!!!!!

My Fil was diagnosed in July with esophageal cancer. To this day I don't know what stage because family says the docs won't tell them (which I find odd)

    * he's almost 84 very frail and done with chemo and radiation
He stays at a rehab trying to get stronger- he's been on feeding tube since July

    * he has a stroke 2 years before and had dome aphasia but played chess etc to stim brai

    Post chemo and radiation :

    He canr talk well
He has been bedridden for month
He slept nearly a month after chemo
Mostly he hallucinates pianos in the room: tells family he's driving all day

    MY QUESTIOn;

When he talks he is sad he my never ear again. IS IT TIMETO LOOK AT Paletive one hospice care???

Since the family keep hoping he be lucid agaiin there is to action
Poor man has been laying in a bed months now ONLY NOW the ARE GOING TO DO A SWALLOW TEST

I AM just the in law but ARENTthere ways to ease the pain for him?

    So sorry to hear this

    Rational thoughts are needed...

The Dr's not telling you what stage he has may be because they know there is no point. Treatment is most likely not going to work or be continued due to his already ill health.

You said he is being fed by a tube but they are only doing a swallow test now? If he is being tube fed, one presumes there is already issues with him swallowing/eating to begin with so once again, they may have already thought that there was very little they could gain from attempting this.

I honestly would be looking at palliative care now that he is not improving or able to get out of bed. My grandmother had a stroke and as hopeful as we were that she would recover, but we had to face reality, we had to do what was best for her and her body & that 24hour palliative end of life care.

Once again, sorry to hear this news.
