I was completely healthy 1 week ago

Last Sunday I went to the ER with classic gallbladder pain. Every Dr., nurse, technician, kitchen worker, and housekeeper expected to see me gallbladderless within two days.
    Then everything went sideways.
Turns out my gallbladder is picture perfect healthy but my liver is chock full of hep C , cirrhosis, and teeming with cancer.
    I just turned 60.
    I don't understand.

I have been diagnosed with primary liver cancer.
I have no control, no answers, and little hope. All the literature points to a quick and ugly death from this type of cancer.
I want to be the one that beats the odds, but ..... I've never had good luck.

I'm new here so hope it's okay to post this. A family member went to Cancer Treatment Center of America for a second opinion on his liver cancer. Through their treatment his life was extended more than double what he had been told at a respected university hospital. I'm so sorry for your diagnosis and hope you can get some good answers.

So today I see the surgical oncologist for the first time. I am expecting the worst.
I know I have multiple tumors, the largest is <5cm. This plus the cirrhosis takes me off the transplant list.
I can only hope he sees a resection as a possibility.
My labs are all normal, with the exception of my liver enzymes which are slightly elevated. I have not lost one ounce of my fluffiness, have no confusion, no vomiting, no anything.... Except cancer.
    Well fingers crossed.

Donnat, I'm sorry to hear of your possible liver cancer. They haven't done a biopsy yet, have they? Have they told you you have liver cancer? That seems irresponsible if they haven't done a biopsy.

Sorry to hear how quickly life has changed for you and sorry there is multiple health issues complicating things.

First, has a biopsy been performed to definitively diagnose Liver Cancer as only a pathology can confirm this. I believe once you meet with the specialist, you should have more answers or at the very least, a path of treatment.

Keep us posted and if a definitive diagnosis has been made, we can go ahead and move your thread to the appropriate forum.

Try to stay positive and let us know how it goes.

Yes the biopsy shows HCC. The surgeon did a few liver biopsies instead of of removing my healthy gallbladder to confirm cirrhosis
At the time (last Thursday) the surgery team, the gastroenterologist, and the attending MD all believed my pain was from cirrhosis and that transplant and treatment were options.
On Friday they did a CT with contrast showing the tumors in the liver. Yesterday the biopsies came back indicating cancer.

I am sorry to hear this Donnat and will move your thread to the Liver Cancer forum. There, you will get more specific advice and/or information which may be helpful to you. Just be patient as it is not a very active forum but there are those who do pop in that have a lot of knowledge.

Hoping for the best possible treatment plan for you.

    Thank you
Just got home from the surgical oncology consult. The doctor is recommending radiation bead therapy?. Tiny beads of radiation injected into the artery to invade the tumor.
His perspective is that the large tumor is surrounding the liver's main artery and causing some slight constriction which in turn is what caused the severe pain that sent out the alert.
He is unsure that the other tiny spots are actually cancerous. He has ordered an MRI to be sure.
At this time my liver is extremely fragile due to the cirrhosis and fibrosis. Yet he said it is working perfectly normally.
So for now everything is waiting on the oncology radiologists the determine if my tumor is right for the targeted therapy or if there is too great a risk of blocking the artery.

I'm not sure why more people don't comment on this forum
Donna: my husband was diagnosed in Oct and he too thought it was gallbladder. He had been feeling fine until then. Difference is he was treated for Hep C in 2005 and was supposed to be getting liver testing on annual physicals. His M.D. felt it was no longer necessary so did not test last 2 years. His tumor found in Oct was >11cm. Inoperable. He was sent to U of M for a trial of Sorafenib. The beads were not an option as his tumor was too large. Start the treatment right away. He has had some complications from the chemo. I think the beads are a positive choice.
