    Papillary Thyroid Cancer

Hi. I was just diagnosed with papillary thyroid cancer. An ENT did the diagnosis (via ultrasound, CT scan, and fna x3), and recommends thyroid removal and removal of affected lymph nodes around the thyroid and in the right side of my neck. I have an appointment with a specialist from endocrinology on Monday and I'm wondering what I can expect, and what questions I should ask. Any suggestions?

Also, I'm struggling most with the thought of a huge scar down and across my neck. How can I best overcome this--as obviously it's something that will be with me the rest of my life?

    Thanks--Ziggy

Last July I had a total thryroidectomy for papillary thyroid cancer. The scar is much less noticeable today. After surgery I had 1/3 positive nodes. This still put me in the low risk group so I do thyroglobulin monitoring instead of a course of radioactive iodine. My 6 month neck ultrasound is next week. I had my neck palpated by 2 different doctors and they felt nothing.

I feel great today and I bet you will do great too! The recover went really fast. Besides taking thyroid hormone there have been no lasting effects. I was back to exercising within a week.
