Thread: My mom was just diagnose with Melanoma.

My mom was just diagnose with Melanoma.

Im not sure where to begin. But in April we had to rush my mom to the hospital because she was running a fever and was incoherent. We found out she caught sepsis. She was in the hospital for 3 and a half days. She improved quickly. I stayed with her in the hospital and 1 day while helping her put her sock on i notice the nodule on the back of her heel and asked her about it. She said it was a blister that her shoe had caused. I asked her how long it had been there. She said she wasnt sure but it had been there for awhile. I told her we need to get it checked out by the doctor. The doctor said it was probably something to have to do with her diabetes so she referred her to a podiatrist. We went to the podiatrist and as soon as he saw it he said he knew exactly what it was and said he was 100% sure it was a granuloma. But i asked was he going to remove it and biopsy it to make sure. He said he wanted to wait a few weeks to see if it will improve and if it hasnt went anywhere by then he would remove it.

Long story short he ended up having to remove it a month later and the biopsy showed Melonoma. On the pathology report of the biopsy it says something about Ajcc stage pT4b. My question is can they stage the cancer with just the biopsy of the tumor? She hasnt had any scans done. She hasnt hasnt had any scans done and we dont even know if its in her lymphnodes or reached her organs.

My mom is a very strong woman. She is 69yrs old and still works everyday 12hrs a day. After she got out of the hospital with sepsis she went back to work 3days later. Even after she found out she has melanoma she asked them will she still be able to work.

    Hi Cassie,

To answer your question, from the biopsy of the tumor they can give you part of the staging. They are using the TNM classification, and the pT4b tells you that the melanoma is 4 mm or greater in depth and I believe the b indicates it showed ulceration. The N would indicate whether there is nodal involvement, and M describes metastasis or spread. At this point, as nodes haven't been tested and she hasn't had scans done, they have only given you the T part. Have they referred your mom to an oncologist? I would strongly recommend seeking out a melanoma specialist at a major cancer center to make sure your mom gets excellent and top-notch care from here on out.

It sounds like your mom is a strong lady, and it is good she had you there to make sure she saw that doctor!

Vulvar mucosal melanoma, superficial spreading type, stage I-II, depth 1 mm with regression
Radical right-sided hemivulvectomy, clitorectomy and bilateral sentinel lymph node biopsies, May 2013, lymph nodes clear
    PET CT, NED, July 2013
Partial left hemivulvectomy/reconstructive surgery Oct 2013, found melanoma in situ on pathology, out to margins
November/January - Underwent 9 vulvar biopsies to try to locate the MIS for surgical excision, unsuccessful
May 2014 - Third vulvectomy/second left hemivulvectomy for wide local excision of MIS, MIS not identified on pathology
PET CT, still NED, June 2015
    PET CT, NED, June 2016
No sign of recurrence, January 2019
