Thread: My dad he finished the battle with Pancreatic Cancer

My dad he finished the battle with Pancreatic Cancer

And is now forever at rest

He passed on Wednesday at 3:30 PM very peacefully, in the blink of an eye, surrounded by his family, in his own bed at home; just as he always wanted.

The hospice nurse had checked him earlier and said that he had about 2 weeks left, I went and visited he and mom after lunch as I did every day, and left and went back to work. My brother (who works downtown and doesn't trek out the burbs as often) decided to leave early and just say hi, I love my little brother, so I left work to stop by mom and dads again and say hi to him.

We got there and said hi to dad, he started coughing just a little bit, and then a little bit more, which sounded wet and gurgling, but the nurse there didnt seem alarmed. His eyes then sharpened (they had been glassy from the morphine), and he tried to say something urgently, but he was unintelligible. He then gave 1 shuddering breath, and then another 30 seconds later, his eyes rolls back, his head lolled to the pillow and his hands fell to the bed. Every line slid off of his face and he looked like a child at rest.

I had been so scared of watching him at the moment of death, wondering if I could sit there and handle hours of agonal breathing and start and stops, wondering if I could stand to be in the same room with my father after he died.

In the end it was one of the most beautiful things I've ever seen. I sat with the body of the man who had been my best friend, my co-worker, my Catholic Deacon, and my Dad, for 4 hours until the funeral home took him. He looked so at peace, and he reminded me of a King who was lying in state, he looked so noble.

My dad was a hero, he was the son of an alcoholic Air Force Colonel, who built a 160 employee multi million dollar empire from the ground up through his own hard work. He saved the lives of 33 miners trapped underground in Chile by engineering and executing the drilling program to get them out, and he helped numerous cancer patients volunteering as a Catholic chaplain before his diagnosis. With all of these accolades and achievements, they paled in comparison to the type of father he was, he was the best ever.

I will miss him forever, but am so glad he is in heaven where he will never hurt again.

Eternal rest grant unto him and let perpetual light shine upon him. May his soul, and the souls of al the faithful departed rest in peace. Grant consolation unto his loved ones in this, their time of sorrow. Amen.

I'm very sorry for your loss. You wrote a beautiful and moving portrait of your dad. He indeed sounds to have been a beautiful person. Helping those 33 miners in Chile! Wow!

    Warmly
    Brigitte

Eternal rest my friend. He deserves it. It is a tough battle only for the most brave to put up with it. The diagnosis, the prognosis, the fear and daily hope VS reality. No more fear now dear. RIP
